SITE-SPECIFIC DANCES

Inspired by the theatricality of the natural world, the growing awareness of pressing environmental issues, and the desire to push the limits of interdisciplinary performance, Site-Specific Dances was founded by choreographer/architect husband duo Michael Spencer Phillips & Dino Kiratzidis, as an investigation in the synthesis of performance and place.

ENVIRONMENTAL DANCE / SITE ACTIVATIONS

Expanding upon earlier experiments in site-specificity in modern dance, Site-Specific Dances, led by Michael Spencer Phillips, has staged performances in landscapes as diverse as dunes, lakes, forests, creeks and mountains. These performances are filmed using stationary cameras, gimbals, drones, and GoPro cameras, and the footage is edited into a series of video pieces for multi-channel performance installation.

These installations are also site-specific and can activate found spaces, including urban public spaces. The accompanying scores are composed by emerging composers and the video installations are screened with a cast of local live musicians and live dancers.

SUPPORT

Site-Specific Dances has received generous support from Tauck Ritzau Innovative Philanthropy, ArtBridge, the Stonewall Community Foundation, ArtsEverywhere Canada, The Musagetes Foundation, and Zeterre Landscape Architecture.
